Need to Organize Your Charging? Check Out the Chargepod

Posted by Jason Dunn in "HARDWARE" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.callpod.com/products/chargepod

"Chargepod is a 6-way charging device that allows you to charge multiple cell phones, PDAs, headsets, and most other mobile electronics with a single power cord. Just pick out the manufacturer-specific adapters for your devices and throw away the dozens of power cords and wall warts that are cluttering your office and home. Chargepod uses voltage regulator technology and interchangeable power adapters to work with all of your mobile devices regardless of manufacturer or model."

This looks like a clever way of charging your devices in a more organized way. 500mA of power is supplied to each charging port, and power comes in via a USB port (presumably connected to some form of AC power adaptor). The product is reasonably priced at $49.95, but the adaptors are $9.95 each so if you need to pick up six different adaptors to use all six ports, you end up spending 20% more on the adaptors than on the Chargepod itself. Still, if you want to organize your charging station, this looks like a great way to do it.

Check Those Monthly Phone Statements

Posted by Mike Temporale in "ARTICLE" @ 09:00 AM

http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-11288_7-6464118-1.html?tag=nl.e501

"So you got your cell phone bill for the month and zipped it open, only to receive a rude shock when you saw the total. What's this--double the amount it was last time? Is there a mistake? Did you make a three-hour call to Hong Kong? Do identity thieves have your account information in their vile clutches? Unfortunately, finding the answer in your bill isn't easy, as we're sure you've discovered. Even those with relatively simple cell plans can wind up with bills that are 5 or 10 pages long..."

Cnet has posted a helpful article on how to read your monthly phone bill. This is a rather timely piece especially given the recent issues Smartphone Thoughts reader, xultar, experienced. So, how many of you have caught errors on your monthly statement? I can say that I haven't had a single issue in all the years I've been with Fido. I can't say the same for my time spent with Rogers.

Foley on Microsoft: Give Me a Blank Check, Microsoft!

Posted by Kris Kumar in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 09:30 AM

http://redmondmag.com/columns/article.asp?editorialsid=1218

What will you do if Microsoft gave you a blank check and you could use it anyway you wanted, as long as it helps add value to the company. This is one of the ideas that Mary Jo Foley, editor of Microsoft Watch, has on her mind:

Mary Jo Foley said: Steal some Apple designers for your Xbox and Smartphone teams. Regardless of how technically savvy Microsoft gets on the consumer front, it just cant command the same level of cool as Apple. Do a Google search and go on a poaching run. Siphon off some of those iPod and iMac designers and turn them loose.

I love the idea, what about you?

T-Mobile Offers Personal Coverage Check

Posted by Kris Kumar in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 05:30 AM

http://coverage.t-mobile.com/Compass2/

T-Mobile USA in an attempt to attract future customers, is offering a new tool on its website. This tool called the Personal Coverage Check lets you punch in a street address and view the street level signal strength. 8) I have never been impressed with the national coverage maps or the per-zone coverage maps found in the carrier service brochures. Most of the time they offer outdated information. This online tool offers more realistic coverage information, and enables you to get an idea of the actual coverage in the area where you spend most of your time.

It will definitely help the new customers make up their minds. But I am sure existing T-Mobile customers will find it handy too. I learnt that the signal strength in the area where my future home is located is the same as my current apartment. :-( Wish it would have gone from the current good to great. Check out the coverage in your area. And let us know what you think about this tool.

Pre-Flight Check In Using Your Mobile Phone

Posted by Mike Temporale in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 08:00 AM

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=1293&e=4&u=/nm/20041116/tc_nm/airlines_mobile_dc

"Passengers wanting to skip airport queues will be able to check in for flights using their mobile phone beginning next year, two European firms set to offer the service announced on Tuesday. ...Passengers can check in, change seats, check times and receive details for dropping off baggage using their phones."

It sounds like a nice idea, but what's stopping me from checking in while I'm stuck in traffic on the way to the airport? If you're not at the airport, you should not be able to check in. At least, that makes sense to me. However, I don't travel very much so my opinion may be a little off.

Want to Win a Smartphone? I Hope You Check the Site Today!

Posted by Jason Dunn in "EVENT" @ 11:00 AM

Remember our big giveaway contest? Well, the winner of the Smartphone developer kit, which included a real Smartphone (the Red-E) turned out to be Rafe Blandford, the Webmaster of All About Symbian, and the owner of a Smartphone from the Mobius 2003 event. Now Rafe, being the fine chap that he is, has graciously offered to give the Smartphone to someone who doesn't already have one.So here's the deal: send an email message to ?subject=I want to win the Smartphone!"][email protected]. In that email message, include your Smartphone Thoughts username (yes, you need to be registered to enter) and one reason why you'd like to own a Smartphone. There's no way I can enforce this, but I'd really like to ask those of you that already have Smartphones not to enter this contest. I'd very much like to see this Smartphone go to someone who doesn't yet have one. This post is going live at 12 PM MT, and it's going to last until exactly 8 PM MT tonight - eight hours total. It's a small window because I want to reward those of you who are visiting this site often while things are a little...slow.

Check Your POP/IMAP Mail During ActiveSync

Posted by Eric Lin in "SOFTWARE" @ 03:11 PM

http://revolution.cx/rcx/smartphone.htm

Many of us have configured our Smartphones to sync to a POP or IMAP account instead of our Outlook inbox or an Exchange account. This is great for checking our mail account of choice on the go, but large mail syncs can rack up costly GPRS charges. You can manually sync your Inbox via Internet passthrough during ActiveSync, but since you have to activate it manually, it's easy to forget... until now.

"Mail Checker for Smartphone will automatically check for new email but only when connected to a "free" Internet connection such as the pass through one in ActiveSync. In other words you can use IMAP or POP3 and have your phone automatically check for new email only when it's in its cradle.

This is an unsigned Smartphone .exe so you'll have to put it in your start menu directly. This is beta test software and will expire 8/15/2003."
