PC, Windows Mobile, Xbox 360, and Zune in Connected Gaming?

Posted by Darius Wey in "NEWS" @ 06:00 AM

"A gaming system including handheld devices and console devices has variable functionality and processing performance as determined by the number of components in the system. Gaming components can be combined wirelessly, by wired connections (e.g., via a docking station), or a combination thereof. The processing capabilities and functionality of each gaming component in a combination are augmented by the processing capabilities and functionality of other gaming components in the combination. To take advantage of another gaming components processing capabilities and memory capacity, each gaming component is capable of utilizing another gaming component to process gaming applications. Further, each gaming component is capable of rendering audio and/or video information provided by another gaming component. Also, a gaming component is capable of utilizing another gaming component as an adjunct processor."

This patent filed by Microsoft isn't a reference to Live Anywhere, but something much more. It suggests that one hardware component of a gaming ecosystem can utilize the processing capabilities of another connected component to fulfill a task. Imagine using your Pocket PC as a display or your Zune as a controller for your Xbox 360. Of course, all this is highly theoretical, and patents should always be taken with a grain of salt - at least, until they materialize. Your thoughts on the whole thing?

Qantas to Conduct an Evaluation of New Technology Allowing Customers to stay Connected Inflight

Posted by Jerry Raia in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 08:39 AM

http://www.qantas.com.au/regions/dyn/au/publicaffairs/details?ArticleID=2006/aug06/Q3469

"Qantas said it would introduce new technology from early 2007, which will enable customers to make and receive emails, SMS and calls via their own mobile phone or personal electronic devices such as Blackberrys. Qantas Group General Manager of Customer Product and Services, Ms Lesley Grant, said the airline would evaluate the technology over a three-month period on a Boeing 767 aircraft operating on Australian domestic routes. "Qantas will be one of the first airlines in the world to offer this service." Ms Grant said Qantas' research indicated that customers were increasingly demanding the same range of services in the air as those available on the ground."

It will be interesting to see how this flies. No pun intended. While the debate over whether people should be chatting on cellphones during flights will never end, it looks like it is coming to an airplane near you soon. What do you think?

Are You Connected?

Posted by Andy Sjostrom in "DEVELOPER" @ 02:00 PM

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnnetcomp/html/networkcomponent.asp

Designing applications that are automatically aware of whether or not a network connection exists becomes increasingly interesting. Today's devices can connect using cellular networks, WiFi networks and even passing through the connection held by a desktop PC. Synchronization is one scenario where an application's ability to make intelligent and automatic decisions based on connectivity is useful.

MSDN authors Dan Fox and Jon Box just got their latest contribution "Testing for and Responding to Network Connections in the .NET Compact Framework" published. Take a look at their sample code to learn how to detect network connections from your Microsoft .NET Compact Framework-based applications.

This is easily the nicest-looking weather application I've ever seen on any platform, so if you're in the US and have a Smartphone, download this now - it's free! I'd pay for a version that worked in Canada though. :?
