How Many Mobile Phone Number Fields Outlook (Mobile) should have?

Posted by Pete Paxton in "THOUGHT" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.theunwired.net/?itemid=3862

"Not sure how it is about you but for me, Outlook lacks one important field: private mobile phone numbers. Outlook has many fields for contact details, like Assistant phone number (very useful), Business Fax, Home Fax, Other Fax (three fax number fields? ), Pager (who is using a Pager today), Primary and Radio (what ever it is) and even Telex (though the last Telex was disconnected in the late 80s in the last century) but Outlook 2007 has just one filed for mobile numbers! I'm not going to say that all the previously mentioned fields don't make any sense anymore today but please - why just one Mobile field after Microsoft just recently introduced its new Outlook 2007, Exchange 2007 and Windows Mobile 6? Wouldn't it be the perfect timing to introduce new fields?"

Is Microsoft just copying and pasting their Outlook mobile WM5 template into their Outlook mobile WM6 template and adding a few extra functions to make it look fresh? Sometimes I wonder if Microsoft is real-world thinking about what is really needed for 2007. Here we have an article that feels that the fields in Outlook mobile are outdated and should contain fields that are more revelent for today. What do you think? Does Outlook mobile need an overhaul such as number of fields to fit today's real world contact management functions? What else would you add or subtract?

Are There Too Many Ways to Locate Contacts on Your Smartphone?

Posted by Mike Temporale in "ARTICLE" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.theunwired.net/?itemid=2847

"During the past two weeks, I heavily played with my new i-mate SP5 Windows Mobile Smartphone and one question came into my mind almost every day: how many contact buttons does a regular mobile phone user needs? As a matter of fact, the standard Windows Mobile 5.0 platform offers three ways to open the contacts: two from the Home screen and one from the programs menu. However, HTC just added a third way to open the contacts from, let's say, everywhere and I came to the conclusion that two of the options are too much."

Arne Hess over at the::unwired, has posted an article talking about the number of different ways he can do the same thing - open contacts, on his new SP5 Smartphone. Grand total: 3 from the home screen (non SP5 phones have 2), and 1 from the start menu. I agree, it seems like overkill. I didn't realize that the SP5 had a dedicated Contacts button. I can't imagine it will be long before someone figures out how to hack this button and have it run whatever application you want.

Cingular Expelled from BBB for too Many Complaints

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 05:00 AM

"Cingular Wireless L.L.C. has been expelled from the Better Business Bureau of Upstate New York, according to a report in a Rochester, N.Y., newspaper. The nation's largest wireless carrier acknowledged the situation. "We take all customer complaints very seriously, and we're working diligently to address the concerns brought to our attention by the BBB of Upstate NY. We want to set this right," said Rochelle Cohen, Cingular spokeswoman. "We will be meeting with BBB representatives today to address any outstanding issues they may have, and we will apply for reinstatement as soon as possible. It's very important for us to be a member in good standing." The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle said Cingular had 20 unanswered complaints and 200 total complaints during the past three years. The expulsion is effective immediately. Cingular can reapply for membership in a year, said the paper."

It was going to happen to one of them eventually. Maybe this will get the rest of them to take customer server more seriously in the future. :?

Too Many Buttons

Posted by Kris Kumar in "THOUGHT" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.russellbeattie.com/notebook/1008360.html

"Okay, another diagram. this time not as clean, but it'll get the job done. I didn't feel like drawing out all those different buttons to present. What I did was grab some keypads from the most advanced or latest models of biggest manufacturers. That would the Nokia 6680, Motorola SLVR, Sony Ericsson Walkman phone, Audiovox SMT5600, a Samsung SCH-A890, and a couple Japanese phones - one from KDDI and one from DoCoMo. What I'm trying to point out is the multitude of buttons on the front face of most of them. ... There's quite a few options and no two models are the same, even though they've more or less standardized on the two soft buttons and five way joystick thing. These are just the basic designs of the buttons on the front and doesn't count all the stuff on the top and sides. There are also phones coming that add four audio control buttons adding even *more* buttons. And none of these are standard."

Russell Beattie has posted an interesting article on the non-existence of a standard for the cell phone keypad. Recently at the CTIA 2005, the wireless operators agreed the cell phones need to be far less confusing to the consumers. Do you think Microsoft has got the right set of special function keys on its Smartphone? Apart from the texting problem, what do you feel is the most annoying thing about the Smartphone keypad? Do you think Microsoft could have done better? What are your thoughts?

How Many MegaPixels Is Enough?

Posted by Mike Temporale in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.engadget.com/entry/6796026482535671/

"Dude, your cameraphone only has three megapixels? So weak. Samsungs are already obsolescing the SPH-2300 (pictured at right), that three megapixel model they introduced a couple of months ago and have announced plans to have a five megapixel cameraphone out by the end of the year."

How much is enough? If they could stop focusing on the MegaPixel count, and spend some time on the image quality, then I might actually care about this. :(
