God Bless the i(Pod)Phone for Making AT&T Boost their EDGE Network Speed

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 11:40 PM

Steve Jobs must have gotten really angry when he tried his soon to be revolutionary mobile gadget for the very first time on AT&T's EDGE network. That would explain why the AT&T executives scrambled to get the EDGE data network performance up from the dismal 45Kbits/sec. I tried the DSLReports a few times on my Dash, and put together the above animated image that shows the results ranging from 66Kbits/sec to 165Kbits/sec. I am easily averaging speed over 100Kbits/sec and even saw a high of 175Kbits/sec. I know it is not as stunning as the latest speed boost that the Verizon EV-DO customers got, but still for us EDGE users it is a big improvement. Who would have thought that Windows Mobile users will also benefit from the launch of a competitor's phone; thank you Apple. The one thing that bugs me is that how come AT&T didn't perform the upgrades a lot sooner, aren't BlackBerry, Treo and Windows Mobile data users worthy of speeds over 100Kbits/sec? Anyway, lets enjoy the speed boost. Please do share with us the speed that you are getting using the test site over here, and also your location.

Mobile VoIP Needs High Speed Uplink for Quality Calls

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 12:30 PM

http://www.infoworld.com/article/06/03/13/76374_HNmobilevoip_1.html?source=NLC-TB2006-03-13

"Internet telephony over mobile phones is on the way but don't expect many commercial offerings until operators have made a key network technology enhancement, probably toward the end of 2007 or later in most parts of the world, according to a senior executive with Lucent Technologies Inc. The problem with providing VOIP (voice over Internet Protocol) service over mobile handsets today is the uplink, which is too slow to support quality voice calls, according to Lucent Chief Marketing Officer John Giere. To increase uplink speeds, operators of GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) networks, which dominate Europe and many parts of Asia and Latin America, will need to upgrade their networks with HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) technology, he said. "HSUPA will give operators the bidirectional capability they need to run real VOIP," Giere said in an interview last week at the Cebit trade show in Hanover, Germany."

If you're interested in VoIP, this article helps to outline what's holding us back from getting good quality VoIP on your mobile handset. It looks like the carriers have a lot of work to do. Thankfully, some of us have WiFi and don't need to wait for the carriers to play catch up. ;)

Toshiba Boosts Flash Memory Speed

Posted by Kris Kumar in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 11:30 AM

http://www.pcworld.com/resource/article/0,aid,123628,pg,1,RSS,RSS,00.asp

"Toshiba is planning to double the read/write speed of its NAND flash memory chips in the next year. NAND flash memory is used as the basic storage in devices such as digital cameras, music players and memory cards and faster chips could mean faster data transfers between computers and the devices. At present, Toshiba's flash chips can read and write data at 6MB per second but this will be doubled to 12MB per second sometime next year when the company begins producing chips on a new manufacturing line, said Hiroko Mochida, a Toshiba spokesperson."

Good to see Toshiba planning to improve the data transfer speeds of its flash memory chips. We are using the flash memory cards on our Smartphones more than ever, for storing music files, maps, photos and other files. Recently I had installed Lexipedia, a Wikipedia based encyclopedia, which installs a 200+ MB database on the storage card. I could have definitely used a faster storage card. ;-) In a related news story, Intel is partnering with Micron to produce flash memory, which is expected to bring down the price of flash memory. :)

Speed Reader Plus from MobileDynamo

Posted by Kris Kumar in "SOFTWARE" @ 10:30 AM

http://www.mobiledynamo.com/prod02.htm

"Speed Reader Plus Smartphone Edition allows you to read documents and e-Books on your Smartphone at amazing speeds using RSVP and ColorBar (patent pending) technologies (~500 WPM for new text and ~1000 WPM when flash reviewing text). A perfect solution for reading long documents on small screens. Speed Reader Plus Smartphone Edition is ideal for its productivity, entertainment and educational value."

User submitted image

Recently I had mentioned a Java based Rapid Serial Visualization Presentation (RSVP) application called BuddyBuzz. Unlike BuddyBuzz, Speed Reader Plus from MobileDynamo is written for Windows Mobile Smartphone and uses its own ColorBar technology. The ColorBar will gradually change color as each word in the sentence is displayed, giving you a sense of the word's location in the sentence. 8) So if you love e-books then you must download this application and give it a try. Speed Reader Plus can be purchased for $19.99 and the trial version can be downloaded from here.

Inbox Speed Reader from MobileDynamo

"Inbox Speed Reader allows you to read your inbox items (eMail, SMS) on your Smartphone at amazing speeds using RSVP and ColorBar (patent pending) technologies (~500 WPM for new text and ~1000 WPM when flash reviewing text). A perfect solution for reading long messages on small screens. Inbox Speed Reader is ideal for its productivity value."

Recently while talking about Rapid Serial Visualization Presentation (RSVP) based e-book application called BuddyBuzz, I had expressed the desire to have a similar application for reading the E-Mails on my Smartphone. Our reader diar pointed out MobileDynamo's Inbox Speed Reader application. Using this Smartphone application we can speed read our E-Mails. I tried the application out and once I got used to reading the flashing words, I found that I could indeed speed read. :) Now I wish this application was integrated as a menu option in the Smartphone's Pocket Outlook Inbox, rather than having its own inbox view. I believe that is something the Windows Mobile 5.0 based version of this application will be able to do. Inbox Speed Reader can be purchased for $29.99 and the trial version can be downloaded from here.

Samsung Debuts Higher Capacity Flash Chips with Increased Speed

Posted by Jason Dunn in "NEWS" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.betanews.com/article/Samsung_Debuts_High_Capacity_Flash/1117646256

"Samsung has developed a new line of Flash memory that will not only allow manufacturers to shrink devices even further, but also provide more space and higher speed than was previously thought possible. The new technology will allow for up to 8GB of data to be stored on a single Flash chip, meaning devices will stay the same size while their storage capacities will be vastly increased. The 4-gigabit Flash memory chip will allow for 40 percent more chips to be put on each wafer of silicon."

Most people don't realize this, but Samsung is one of the biggest players in the Flash market, with a 56% share of the total market. This capacity and speed boost will not only benefit our devices, but we'll probably see this advancement make it's way into the hybrid Flash hard drives Samsung has announced (which is fantastic news for us laptop owners).

Spoken Speed Camera Warnings For TomTom

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 01:30 PM

http://www.coolsmartphone.com/news1262.html

"Y'know that TomTom Review I did ? Y'know how I said that you can use the excellent speed camera database at PocketGPSWorld.com to see when a speed camera is near? Well, they've gone one better now - adding in full spoken phrases for approaching speed cameras. Just click here to learn more. PocketGPSWorld.com have been producing their Safety Camera POI database for three years now, and until now you've had to use your own WAV sounds for warnings or the "bell" noises in more recent versions of the TomTom software. You can now get spoken POI Alerts or more information about the speed camera database by clicking here."

I would like to see points-of-interest speed camera database for North America. :)

Verizon Unveils High Speed Data Network Plans

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 09:00 AM

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040922/ap_on_hi_te/high_speed_wireless_1

"Verizon Wireless plans next week to expand its high-speed mobile data service to 11 more markets, including New York and Los Angeles, as well as 19 more airports. The speedier laptop connections will be marketed only to businesses while the company adds coverage and readies services and devices for a consumer-oriented launch in 2005, Verizon Wireless said Wednesday...Verizon Wireless, owned jointly by Verizon Communicaions Inc. and Vodafone PLC, is promising downloads of 300 to 500 kilobits per second using "EV-DO" technology, rivaling the speed of entry-level DSL and cable broadband connections."

The race to upgrade the cell phone data networks in the US has begun. Currently Verizon Wireless and AT&T are the two main participants, who have high speed networks operational. Verizon currently does not have any EV-DO capable phone and is only offering EV-DO laptop cards for $100 after a $150 rebate. The high speed mobility will come at a high price, $80 per month. 8O

Simple Tweak To Boost Internet Speed On Verizon i600

Posted by Kris Kumar in "SOFTWARE" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=40813

"Oh yeah, you're right. I was getting 11kbps before, and now I'm getting 93kbps. That's a 9x increase."

8O

That's what ChrisWalker said after trying out the tip posted by our reader Bugwart. I don't have an i600 to verify the speed boost, but it's definitely worth a shot. Please post your results in the original thread. And don't forget to thank Bugwart for figuring this out.

Testing Memory Card Speed

Posted by Jason Dunn in "SOFTWARE" @ 10:38 PM

http://www.steelbytes.com/

I'm doing some speed tests on a few different brands of 512 MB Secure Digital cards, and I needed to come up with a good way of testing them. I discovered a tool last year called HD_Speed, and it does exactly what you think: it allows you to test both reading and writing speeds of any drive attached to the system: hard drives, optical drives, and flash memory cards. The developer was even kind enough to alter the program for me to add a new feature that would make my testing even easier. If you're a stats junkie, download this app - and, even better, it's free! Look under the "Disk Utils" section to grab it.

Nexttel Prepares High Speed Wireless Data Network Test

Posted by Jason Dunn in "NEWS" @ 02:09 PM

http://www.mobiletracker.net/archives/2004/02/05/nextel_preps_hi.php

"Nextel, the carrier most known for its push-to-talk services, is testing a highspeed data network in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina. According to the company, speeds as high of 3 megabits can be experienced (more than twice the speed of a T1). If the trial goes well, the network will go head to head against Verizon Wireless 1xEV-DO technology that is going nationwide."

More speed, more speed! :D

"Israeli Processor Computes at Speed of Light" - Daily Times

Posted by Jason Dunn in "NEWS" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=story_30-10-2003_pg9_1

"An Israeli start-up has developed a processor that uses optics instead of silicon, enabling it to compute at the speed of light, the company said...The processor performs 8 trillion operations per second, equivalent to a super-computer and 1,000 times faster than standard processors, with 256 lasers performing computations at light speed. It is geared towards such applications as high resolution radar, electronic warfare, luggage screening at airports, video compression, weather forecasting and cellular base stations."

Processing at the speed of light on a Smartphone? Woo hoo! :D Of course, it will take a long time for them to go from their 15 cm x 15 cm x 1.7 cm prototype to a small chip, but it's impressive technology none the less.
