HTC To Unveil Windows Mobile Lineup At Upcoming Press Event?

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "Smartphone News" @ 08:38 PM

http://www.theunwired.net/?item=event-htc-to-unveil-its-q4-windows-mobile-range-next-week

"While Apple chose London to inform the world of the iPhone's international agenda, HTC is reportedly looking to make a few announcements of its own on that side of the pond. According to TheUnwired, HTC will hold two press events on the first two days in October, the first of which will be in the UK and the second in Germany. Best guesses suggest that we'll be learning a bit more about the firm's forthcoming Windows Mobile-based lineup, and we can only hope that the Kii, Omni and / or Polaris are part of the show -- but considering the location and all, we wouldn't bet the farm on hearing too much about the likely US-bound Juno. Hold tight kids, the events get going in under a week."

While the past few months have been pretty lackluster for HTC, I am excited to see what new goodies they have in store for us on October 1st and 2nd. Hopefully they unveil some new and exciting Windows Mobile Standard devices and this event isn't chalk full of a bunch of "me too" devices like the HTC Touch. Keep your fingers crossed and stay tuned. The first couple days of October should be rather interesting!

O2 Germany to Release the HTC Excalibur Smartphone as O2 Xda Cosmo

Posted by Jerry Raia in "HARDWARE" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.theunwired.net/?itemid=3289#article

"German consumer telecommunication magazine "connect" got a working prototype of the HTC Excalibur in their hands and has published some further information about it in its latest issue. Although its previously been seen with T-Mobile themes, connect indicates that it will be carried by O2 Germany, with XDA branding. According to connect, the O2 Xda cosmo the Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone will be available during September or October of this year. Of course what this means is that European carriers can expect to see it in the next couple of months, while American carriers will probably take another month or two. The Excalibur is HTC's answer to the Motorola Q."

Where do they come up with these names? The Blackberry killers are finally starting to come out of the factory. Leading the pack is the Q and now Excalibur (or whatever freakish thing it will be called by your carrier). If anyone gets their hands on one of these let us know what you think.

Vodafone Germany to Launch the HTC Star Trek as Qtek 8500

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 05:55 AM

http://www.theunwired.net/?itemid=3162

"In addition to the VPA compact III announcement, Vodafone Germany also announced today to release the Qtek 8500 HTC Star Trek or as it is called now "STRTrk") this summer. HTC's first clamshell Windows Mobile Smartphone (see my previous review of the Qtek 8500 here) is sporting quad-band GSM, GPRS and EDGE, communicates in short-range via Bluetooth (but misses IrDA), weights only 99 grams with battery and touts a breath-taking 16mm with a build-in 1.3-megapixel camera and dedicated music control buttons. It's powered by Microsoft's latest Windows Mobile 5.0 and running with a TI OMAP CPU at 200 MHz, has 64 MB RAM and 64 MB ROM. The main 2.2" TFT LCD with LED backlight gives you crystal clear, crisp and vibrant image and colors. The secondary 1.2" TFT LCD on the front cover keeps you always informed of the time and date, identity of callers and what music is playing. Vodafone Germany plans to release it during August and with a 24 month contract it will retail for 169,50 Euro. Without a contract it will costs 599,50 Euro."

Vodafone Germany is the first carrier to announce the launch of the HTC STRTrk on its network. Let's hope that the US carriers will follow with similar announcements. ;-) Some might argue that the slim and QWERTY Smartphones, the Q and the i320, have changed the Smartphone market. I think there is still a huge potential for a slim non-QWERTY clam-shell Smartphone.

O2 Germany Officially Announces the O2 Xda Smartphone

Posted by Mike Temporale in "HARDWARE" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.theunwired.net/?itemid=2639

"Together with the Xda mini S, O2 Germany also announced its latest Windows Mobile Smartphone which was also revealed in the latest shop flyer already. O2 Germany will release the HTC Typhoon later this year as Xda phone which is O2 Germany's first "own" Smartphone The Xda phone is a quad-band GSM/GPRS mobile phone using the "HTC Douton" ID which is basically the same ID as we knew it from the Orange SPV C550 but running Windows Mobile 5.0 instead. It also includes Bluetooth 1.2 and IrDA as well as a 1.3 megapixel camera but no Wifi b (11 Mbits) as the HTC Tornado platform provides."

Arne Hess, over at the::unwired.net, has posted about the new O2 Xda Smartphone. Which is really just a C550 with Windows Mobile 5.0 instead of the 2003 Second Edition that Orange released it with. O2 has not announced any dates or prices, but it is expected to be available in October for around 100 Euro with contract and 300 without.

HTC Tornado to be Picked Up by T-Mobile Germany & i-mate

Posted by Mike Temporale in "HARDWARE" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.theunwired.net/?itemid=2589

"While T-Mobile Germany hasn't announced it yet (beside the earlier CeBIT announcement), the T-Mobile SDA II Smartphone appeared on the business customer page of T-Mobile Germany recently. However, all the information T-Mobile provides there doesn't seems to be the final one, from the device photo to the specifications. For instance T-Mobile isn't providing any information about the used operating system (and normally they do) or T-Mobile is describing the SDA II as a "black device" while the photo shows a silver one"

Earlier this week we showed you the new Qtek 8300/8310 devices. As expected, Qtek isn't the only one getting ready to sell the latest HTC hardware. Arne over at the::unwired has posted about the new T-Mobile SDA II, (Germany) and it looks like i-mate is going to be offering it as the SP5m - or at least Expansys UK seems to think so. I think it's safe to say that the latest HTC hardware is going to be as popular as the previous models.

T-Mobile Germany Releases StarMoney Mobile 2.0 for Smartphone

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 08:30 AM

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=4691

"With StarMoney Mobile 2.0, T-Mobile Deutschland promises to turn the PDA or smartphone ino a mobile finance center. The software allows users to check the current balance of bank accounts, inquiry current entries and make transfers between accounts. The software works over the GPRS connection, and can be used while in Germany or overseas, providing data roaming is available. Current transaction data from several accounts can be quickly retrieved and saved on the device. The program offers a detailed overview of the status of all accounts including transaction details. Transactions can be prepared in offline mode by entering the information into a digital transfer form, and a data connection is established when the data is ready to be exchange with the banks' servers."

Ok, at first I was a little concerned about having all my bank info stored on my phone allowing anyone who grabs my phone to have control over my finances. Then I realized it's not any different than using eWallet. All my banking information is stored - securely - in a file on my phone. And with that realization, I'm officially jealous. I want a version of this application that works for my bank. :(

Vodafone Germany to Release the Motorola MPx220

Posted by Jerry Raia in "NEWS" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.ppcw.net/?itemid=2233

"According to the German online magazine heise.de, Vodafone Germany is ready to release the Motorola MPx220 Windows Mobile Smartphone during February this year. Without a contract it should be available for around 470 Euro. Wow, good news for Windows Mobile lovers; after the successful T-Mobile SDA-line launch and o2's announcement to release the MPx220 (wonder when it will happens), now Vodafone Germany joins the Smartphone hype with the MPx220! :-) Germany becomes Smartphone paradise. ;-)"

I have to give it to Vodafone. They were smart and waited until North America finished beta testing the MPx220 for Motorola before unleashing it on their unsuspecting customers. It is good when this Smartphone thing spreads though. I have to ask, how do you say "Can you hear me now?" in German? 8)

T-Mobile SDA Music Available in Germany

Posted by marlof in "HARDWARE" @ 04:00 PM

http://www.t-mobile.de/shop/handy/1,4855,2963-_3186-0-1-0,00.html

The T-Mobile SDA (AKA the black phone) is a stylish device, but may be you're more tempted by its hip sister, the T-Mobile SDA Music (AKA the white phone). This version, on which Mike reported earlier, has lost the messaging button of the regular SDA, and exchanged that with three buttons to navigate through your music player. Personally I like my phone (which I use a lot in a business setting) better in black, and I already have an excellent white music player, so the Music was not for me. But if you're not as boring as me, and a music loving Smartphone user, the SDA Music might be all you ever wanted. In Germany it's currently available for 389.95, which is a bit more expensive than the SDA, but not by a large margin.

Motorola MPx220 Coming From o2 Germany

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.ppcw.net/?itemid=2037

"It took a while that Motorola finally announced their long awaited Motorola MPx220 Smartphone a couple of weeks ago and so far there wasn't any confirmed information available which carrier will release it.
Today, when I was in a local o2 shop, I picked up their latest shop-flyer, valid from 1. October until 14. October and for my surprise I found the following information: On page 13, o2 Germany provides a forecast about upcoming devices for Christmas (Christmas - already ?) and beside two new UMTS terminals from Motorola and Nokia and Nokia's latest Communicator, o2 Germany also pre-announced the Motorola MPx220!"

User submitted image

I think this is the first carrier to announce that they will carry the MPx220. Although there is no price or specific release date, it's a good sign that our long wait will be coming to an end soon. :D
