Microsoft Updates Windows Mobile 6.1 Emulator Images; Includes Internet Explorer Mobile 6

Posted by Darius Wey in "Pocket PC Developer" @ 10:30 AM

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&displaylang=en

"Windows Mobile 6.1.4 includes the new Internet Explorer Mobile 6, a full-featured browser for Windows Mobile devices that brings the same high-quality browsing experience to the user as desktop browsers. Internet Explorer Mobile 6 supports desktop-quality rendering and has the best compliance support of all versions of Internet Explorer on a Windows Mobile device to date. Several new features and improved support allows users to complete tasks quickly and easily."

Microsoft has updated its Windows Mobile emulator images to 6.1.4. This release includes the new Internet Explorer Mobile 6 - which isn't exactly a stellar upgrade to this infamous browser, but a welcome one nonetheless. For a list of new features, check the Windows Mobile Team Blog.

These images will appeal most to developers. For the end-users reading this, you know the drill: if you want Internet Explorer Mobile 6 on your device, you'll have to wait and hope that your respective OEM or carrier feels ever-so-generous and blesses you with an update.

Microsoft Releases Windows Mobile 6.1 Localized Emulator Images

Posted by Darius Wey in "Pocket PC Developer" @ 02:30 AM

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&DisplayLang=en

"The Windows Mobile 6.1 Emulator Images package adds emulator images to Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio 2008 that let you test applications for Windows Mobile 6.1. For general information about writing software for Windows Mobile, please see the Windows Mobile Developer Center. The emulator images can also be used as standalone without Visual Studio. They can be accessed through the Start Menu shortcuts."

The Windows Mobile 6.1 localized emulator images are currently available in US English only, which doesn't quite match Microsoft's usual definition of "localized", although you can probably expect that to change over the coming weeks. The Standard (Smartphone) and Professional (Pocket PC) images weigh in at 184.9MB and 272.2MB respectively, and include some new resolutions: 320 x 320, 400 x 240, and 440 x 240 for Standard, and 240 x 400 and 480 x 800 for Professional. Note that the images work standalone, so if you're eager to poke around Windows Mobile 6.1 to see what's new and improved while waiting for your carrier/manufacturer to release an update, this is your ticket. Developers, if you want full integration with Visual Studio, be sure to grab the Windows Mobile 6 SDK prior to installing the images.

Microsoft Release Windows Mobile Device Emulator 2.0

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "SOFTWARE" @ 02:17 PM

http://blogs.msdn.com/jasonlan/archive/2007/03/13/microsoft-device-emulator-v2-0-released.aspx

"Following Microsoft's earlier launch of the Windows Mobile 6 SDK, the Windows Mobile team has now released the Microsoft Device Emulator 2.0, which is the second publicly released version of the Device Emulator for ARM-based Devices. This emulator is also being released with the Windows Mobile 6 SDK and the Adaptation Kit (AK) releases of Windows Mobile 6 and Windows Embedded CE 6.0. The Microsoft Device Emulator can be downloaded free of charge from Microsoft."

Woohoo! I have been waiting for Microsoft to release this for a while now. As most people know, I am one of the most impatient human beings on the face of the planet... well, at least when it comes to new toys I am. If you are like me and have been looking to get your hands on the Windows Mobile 6 operating system before all of those fancy new handsets are released, now is your chance! :D

Windows Mobile Smartphone QVGA Landscape Emulator Now Available

Posted by Kris Kumar in "DEVELOPER" @ 04:15 AM

http://blogs.msdn.com/johnkenn/archive/2006/03/31/565972.aspx

"Good news for Windows Mobile developers eager to test their applications on (presumably) forthcoming devices - there's a new emulator for Visual Studio 2005 that simulates a 320 by 240 landscape-mode Smartphone device. Is there no end to the permutations of screens and Pocket PC / Smartphone variations? Probably not."

User submitted image

Now that the QVGA landscape emulator has been released by Microsoft, we can hope that we will have more Moto Q friendly applications at launch time. ;-) According to John Kennedy the upcoming MEDC 2006 will have a session to help the developers understand the finer points of writing applications that can adjust to multiple resolutions. You can download the emulator image from here.

Internet Connectivity from WM5.0 Emulator Without ActiveSync

Posted by Kris Kumar in "DEVELOPER" @ 05:20 AM

http://nino.net/blogs/nino/archive/2006/01/20/WM5EmulatorInternetConnectivityWithoutActiveSync.aspx

"I've been asked a few times recently about setting up Internet connectivity with the WM5.0 emulator; I usually point people to this post: http://blogs.msdn.com/akhune/archive/2005/11/16/493329.aspx . However, if you want to do it without ActiveSync.."

I don't think Microsoft has released the standalone version of the emulator, by standalone I mean that the emulator does not require Visual Studio 2005. :? For those of you, who have access to the emulator; check out Nino's post on how to configure Internet connectivity.

C64 Emulator adds Windows Mobile 2002 Support

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 08:30 AM

http://www.christian-schlatter.de

Does everyone remember the Commodore 64 emulator that we posted on a while back called PocketHobbit? If you've never heard of this before, now you know. ;) If you were interested in using it, but couldn't because of your Windows Mobile 2002 based smartphone, then you are in luck. Christian has just sent word that he has added support for 2002 based Smartphones. How great is that!

You can get more information, and even download a copy from Christian's wbesite. I guess the only real hurdle now is QVGA support.

Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone Emulator Images

Posted by Mike Temporale in "DEVELOPER" @ 12:30 PM

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=52FED581-8F8D-4C46-9966-4832098191B7&displaylang=en

"The WM 5.0 Smartphone Software Development Kit (SDK) includes an emulator that uses a virtual machine to run the full WM5.0 Smartphone software independent of your main operating system on the same machine. Were pleased to release new Emulator Images that allow you to test your applications in all available WM5.0 Smartphone localizations."

If you want to test your Smartphone application against all the different localizations, then you'll want to grab all the different images that Microsoft has made available. You'll need to have your Windows Mobile 5.0 developer environment fully configured before you can use these files. You can find more information on configuring your environment here.

Send Your Emulator An SMS

Posted by David McNamee in "DEVELOPER" @ 10:00 AM

http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2004/04/27/121497.aspx

This is a really great trick that I didn't know about. When you're writing an application working in the emulator, you can send yourself an SMS. This will be really useful for testing applications that intercept text messages. From the emulator, send a message to +14250010001. You have to use the image with the virtual radio, of course. This works for both Smartphone and Pocket PC Phone Edition.
