Sprite Wipe to Offer Remote Wipe and Device Tracking

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?ContentId=7093

"Currently under beta testing, Sprite Mobile Swipe works on any Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC or Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone, and once installed, hides away in the background until activated by the device's owner. The software cannot be uninstalled without a user selected password. If the device is ever lost, simply send a SMS from a previously specified partner phone and you can have the device locked. You can also go one step further, and send a wipe text message that will erase the entire contents of the phone, including everything on the memory card. If, on the other hand, your phone is stolen, and the thief changes the SIM card, you will automatically get a SMS on the designated partner phone so the user will know the new number."

User submitted image

There are a couple tools on the market that already do this, so it's nothing revolutionary. However, it is good to see a company like Sprite expand their Mobile offerings. I think Sprite has the best chance of making a product with the widest device support, and best integration due to their indepth knowledge of backing up Windows Mobile devices.

izenMobile to Offer New Converged Handset that Blurs the Pocket PC/Smartphone Line

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 07:45 AM

http://www.i-zenmobile.hotshotwebdesign.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=49&Itemid=53

"The izenMobile handsets will be unique in the marketplace. The initial handset available at the introduction is the izenMobile Krma, which combines pocket pc functionality with a smart phone form factor. Additional handsets will be introduced throughout the year, with up to seven models available at a time. The izenMobile handset lineup will incorporate F-Origin technology to provide maximum mobile productivity."

User submitted image

izenMobile is looking to seriously blur the line between the Smartphone and Pocket PC devices with their first handset. It runs Windows Mobile Pocket PC but has the physical look of a Smartphone including the all too familiar keypad. The current specs on this handset are pretty good, but you never know what will change between now and the release of this device. It has a 2 megapixel camera with a flash, 2.2" LCD screen, FM Radio, Bluetooth, Tri-band (900/1800/1900), and it will support for WiFi via miniSD card.

Vodafone to Offer HTC Devices in Japan

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.htc.com/03-press-060914a.htm

"High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC) CEO Peter Chou and Vodafone KK President and Representative Executive Officer Masayoshi Son signed a strategic collaboration agreement under which both parties will collaborate to develop and sell 3G PDA Phones in Japan. With this partnership, HTC, the world's leading provider of Microsoft Windows Mobile devices, will utilize its global experience to expand both companies' customer base and market share in Japan. By selling highly advanced 3G PDA Phones manufactured by HTC, Vodafone will gain a stronger foothold in the Japanese market."

There's no talk about what device Vodafone is going to release or if it's a Pocket PC or Smartphone based handset. The import thing is that this could help the adoption of Windows Mobile in the Japanese market. 8)

McAfee to Offer Cingular Wireless Customers Mobile Anti-Virus Security Services

Posted by Jerry Raia in "SOFTWARE" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.msmobilenews.com/page/1235/

"McAfee, Inc. (NYSE: MFE), the leading dedicated security technology company, today announced that it will offer Cingular Wireless customers mobile security solutions for business-oriented devices. McAfee provides comprehensive mobile security solutions that are designed to protect against and prevent mobile threats and vulnerabilities. Its flagship product is McAfee VirusScan Mobile. "While mobile threats have presented themselves largely as proof of concept, we think it's important for carriers to get ahead of the curve, and offer proactive and preventative solutions before a significant attack occurs," commented Todd Gebhart, senior vice president of Worldwide Consumer and Mobile Sales at McAfee, Inc."

What we really need is a good backup solution for our phones, not a cure for which there is no disease yet. I think I'll save my money and wait for the first virus to hit. I've been waiting a few years now. The AV people keep trying to sell us stuff we don't need. I mean what virus signatures are there to download yet?

CBS to Offer Subscription Video for Phones

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 09:30 AM

http://news.com.com/CBS+to+offer+subscription+video+for+phones/2100-1026-6043583.html?part=dht&tag=nl.e433

"Broadcast network CBS will start a new subscription service next week sending multimedia news and entertainment alerts to cell phones for a small monthly fee, the company said Monday. The company will initially provide subscriptions to CBS News alerts, with video and pictures, for 99 cents a month. A similar subscription to entertainment content from Entertainment Tonight will cost $3.99 a month. The news organization, as well as its sports and other divisions, has previously offered free text alerts for cell phones and has provided video for carriers' services such as Verizon Wireless' V Cast. The new subscription model will test whether consumers are willing to pay a bit more in order to have immediate access to video."

User submitted image

It is good to see that the entertainment and news industry sites are offering solutions aimed at the cell phones and mobile devices, but not sure if I am willing to shell out $3.99 a month for Entertainment Tonight. ;-) We definitely need more diverse content and more news content.

T-Mobile to Offer Low-Cost Unlicensed Mobile Access (Voice Over Wi-Fi) This Year?

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 09:30 AM

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1923274,00.asp

"Chipmaker Royal Philips Electronics confirmed that a U.S. cellular carrier will launch voice-over-Wi-Fi technology this year, based on Philips' new Nexperia 6120 chipset. Callers should be able to make calls on their home Wi-Fi networks for "a couple of bucks a month, flat rate," according to Philips' Carsten Schimanke. ... Philips would not identify their carrier partner. But the Samsung T709 we saw at CES showed options to connect to T-Mobile Hotspots as well as home networks. T-Mobile is leveraging its Wi-Fi network as a competitor to other carriers' 3G high-speed cellular systems. With UMA, every home with a wireless LAN and every Starbucks becomes a place with full bars of signal, and that's compelling."

User submitted image
Check out the UMA details on the official UMA Web site.

The PC Magazine article does not state that T-Mobile is going to launch UMA based phone this year, but all the indicators definitely point in that direction. T-Mobile recently announced a $30 data plan that includes unlimited GPRS/EDGE access and also unlimited Wi-Fi/HotSpots access. Now all they need are compatible handsets and some field testing. If you are wondering what makes UMA different from similar VoIP applications like Skype; the difference is that unlike Skype which works only in the Wi-Fi mode, UMA enables seamless switching of the voice call between the Wi-Fi network and the cellular network. So at home and work, you may use the Wi-Fi network and as you walk out of the building, the UMA technology will switch to the cellular network.

Find What The Neighborhood has to Offer with EarthComber

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.earthcomber.com/splash/index.html

User submitted image

Recently we're been talking about GPS Navigation and how it can be a serious distraction as you drive. While GPS navigation can be handy, some of us don't really need driving directions all that often. Enter EarthComber - a new bread of GPS navigation software. EarthComber runs on your device and will alert you when your near any of your favourite restaurants, theaters, clubs, historical places, coffee houses, and more so much more. At that point, you can ask for directions on how to get there from where you are. I haven't installed this yet, but they just added Windows Mobile support and they list the SPV C600 as a supported device. Which indicates to me, that any Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone should work with this software. I don't need driving directions - roads don't change very often. However, I have problems keeping track of restaurants, coffee stops, and whatnot. So, this will be a welcome addition to my device. If you're going to give it a try, please share your experience with us! I'll report back after the weekend and let you know what I've found out. :D

SmartVideo and DMVN Offer Free Music Videos for Mobile Devices

Posted by Mike Temporale in "CONTENT" @ 11:00 AM

http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=111316&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=807124

"SmartVideo Technologies, Inc., announced mobile viewers can now watch the latest music videos on all Internet enabled devices, such as cellphones, PDAs, and laptops connected via cellular, Wi-Fi, and DSL networks. SmartVideo in partnership with the Digital Music Video Network (DMVN), today launched its groundbreaking, advertising-supported channels featuring videos by the music industry's top artists. A unique feature of this service is SmartVideo's use of an advanced Digital Rights Management (DRM) system that protects the copyright and security of the music. Digital Music Video Network, the first 24 hour-a-day music channel for mobile devices, is now available anywhere in North America. Today's launch by SmartVideo and the Digital Music Network features top 40 hits with plans to introduce additional channels dedicated to urban, dance, rock, country and other music genres in the near future."

User submitted image

This looks pretty interesting. I'm not much of a music video guy, so this type of thing doesn't really interest me. However, I know that there are a lot of people that enjoy their music videos. So for all of you, and anyone else that's just plain curious, check it out and please let us know your thoughts. :D For more information, and to sign up, check out the SmartVideo website.

Verizon to Offer Location Based Tracking for Children

Posted by Mike Temporale in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 08:15 AM

http://www.geek.com/news/geeknews/2006Jan/bpd20060123034363.htm

"Verizon Wireless plans to add a location-based service to accompany its cellphone, designed for young kids, called the Migo. Software for the location based service, created by Autodesk, will allow parents to track their child's Migo phone within yards of their own phone or Internet site. Amazingly, the phone will even alert a parent via a text message if their child leaves a pre-designated area. The service is expected to cost between US$10-15 a month and has a planned launch in May."

That sounds like a great service, but $10 a month? Isn't that a little on the pricey side? It looks like Verizon has a nice service here, too bad they're ruined it with the price. :(

Streets & Trips 2006 to Offer Voice Prompt Directions

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 07:30 AM

http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/051006/sfth017.html?.v=30

"Microsoft Corp. today announced the availability of Microsoft Streets & Trips 2006 with GPS Locator, the latest version of the best-selling mapping and travel planning software for the United States and Canada. Microsoft Streets & Trips 2006 with GPS Locator introduces Voice-Prompted Directions, a hands-free option that reassures travelers with turn-by-turn directional information so everyone in the car can enjoy the ride without the stress of getting lost. For running errands around town, taking a family road trip, finding the way around a new city or planning a day of business meetings, Streets & Trips 2006 with GPS Locator offers easy-to-use tools to plan personalized trips and travel with confidence."

The all new Streets & Trips 2006 offers a number of new features like: Voice-Prompted Directions, a Driving Guidance Pane, a new Dynamic Turn View, Night Map Style, and Locate Me technology which aims to help travelers who might not have their GPS unit, find their way back on course using WiFi hotspots to estimate their location. I'm looking forward to the upgrade. I've always like Streets & Trips, but I was getting a little frustrated with the lack of features.

Amp'd Mobile to Offer Just EV-DO Service

Posted by Mike Temporale in "THE COMPETITION" @ 08:15 AM

http://laptopmag.com/Features/Ampd_Mobile.htm

"When was the last time you heard anyone call their wireless service provider cool? You will when Ampd Mobile launches this fall. Ampd is targeting 18 to 34 year-olds with slick black handsets that you can customize online before you buy. It has all of the right ingredients to make wireless data a must-have instead of an overpriced afterthought. Revolutionary channel-like user interface put videos, music, and games in your face instead of burying them ten menus deep, and it downloads content to your phone and PC simultaneously. In fact, the only thing this wireless maverick has in common with big carriers like Verizon Wireless, from which Ampd is licensing its technology (an arrangement that puts Ampd in the class of Mobile Virtual Network Operators, or MVNOs), is the underlying network. Even in this regard Ampd stands out because it will exclusively sell phones that use high-speed EV-DO technology, guaranteeing a consistent user experience."

User submitted image

I like the part about downloading content to your PC and phone, at the same time. I wonder how that's done? It's a great way to ensure you don't loose something you've purchased. The EV-DO only service is a nice touch too. Everyone will have a fast connection. Then, all they will need is a nice Smartphone.

Cingular & Sprint Offer Discounts to Katrina Victims

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 11:00 AM

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20050909/wr_nm/wireless_discounts_dc

"Cingular Wireless, the No. 1 U.S. wireless carrier, has said it would give customers in the areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina discounts on their cell phone bills, including roaming charges and text messages. Customers in the New Orleans and Biloxi, Mississippi, markets will receive a one-time 50 percent credit on their monthly fee and will not be charged for roaming, extra minutes, long-distance or text messaging from late August through September 30, according to a September 8 letter made available on Friday. Cingular's subscribers in the markets of Mobile, Alabama, Jackson, Mississippi, Baton Rouge and Lafayette, Louisiana, will get a one-time 25 percent discount on their monthly charge as well as unspecified discounts on roaming and text messages."

Nice job Cingular! :way to go: Sprint has also offered a month of free access to those in the affected area, while Verizon has said they are working on a case by case basis and will try to make sure that service is not cut off to those who are late paying their bills. Verizon's offering is a little weak if you ask me. However, it's still something that these people can use and take advantage of right now. Which is head and shoulders above what T-Mobile is doing.

Aspinalls Online Casino to Offer Mobile Gaming

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 01:00 PM

http://finance.lycos.com/qc/news/story.aspx?symbols=CCN:100&story=200508221300_CCN_0822038n

"Phantom Fiber Corporation, the leading developer of wireless platform software announced that it will be providing the technology to enable Aspinalls Online Casino 'Aspinalls.com' to offer mobile gaming. Aspinalls.com is a leading online casino brand established by Damian Aspinall, heir to the founder of the glamorous land-based Aspinalls of Mayfair, London. Aspinalls.com will use Phantom Fiber's advanced wireless platform to deliver mobile wagering to its customers worldwide. Aspinalls.com chose Phantom Fiber because of its established reputation and recognized dominance in providing a secure wireless platform solution to the gaming industry. Aspinalls Mobile (www.AspinallsMobile.com) will offer entertaining casino-style games, which also include features such as mobile banking and mobile account registration for Java-enabled phones, plus for mobile devices powered by Microsoft's Windows Mobile PocketPC Phone Edition and Smartphone series, Palm, Symbian, and RIM Blackberry 7000 series. The result is mobile casino support which literally dominates the mobile device market of more than 600 models worldwide."

For me, visiting the casinos and taking in all the sites and sounds that go along with it, is a big part of the gambling experience. If I'm going to loose my money, then I want something in return. Something more than the ability to loose my money while I'm waiting in line at the doctors office. ;) I have played with a couple of the mobile poker applications, but I use those as practice to help me win a little more when my friends gather for our local poker game.

i-mate To Offer Fonix Voice Dial on Devices

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 01:30 PM

http://www.wirelessdevnet.com/news/2005/aug/15/news1.html

"The Fonix Speech Group, an operating division of Fonix(R) Corp., today announces an agreement with i-mate(TM), the specialists in Microsoft(R) Windows Mobile(TM) device solutions and supportive applications. i-mate(TM) will offer Fonix speech-activated dialing solutions, Fonix VoiceDial(TM) and Fonix VoiceCentral(TM), as downloadable software packages at www.clubimate.com -- the i-mate(TM) device-owner dedicated Web site -- and as bundled software packages to corporate accounts. Fonix receives unit royalty fees from i-mate(TM) for each download or bundled package sold. "This agreement with Fonix furthers i-mate's strategy to meet our customers' needs in providing them with state-of-the-art technology solutions," said Michael Cavey, general manager of content at i-mate."

There's no mention of when Fonix will be made available to existing i-mate customers, or when they will begin to pre-load it on devices. I know some of you have used Fonix and have been really impressed by it. So, I can only see this as good news for an i-mate owner. :D

SK-EarthLink to Offer WiFi/VoIP Enabled Mobile Phone

Posted by Jerry Raia in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.mobiletracker.net/archives/2005/05/02/voip-wifi-cell-phone

"SK-EarthLink, the upcoming 3G mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), is rumored to have a WiFi enabled handset in its future. The phone will function as a normal mobile handset unless in the range of a WiFi hotspot and then it will use Voice over IP technology to make phone calls for a lower price."

Don't hold your breath waiting for this to come to North America. We can't even get Verizon or Cingular to give us phones that don't have crippled Bluetooth let alone a way to bypass their networks to make a call and save money.

Missing Sync to Offer Windows Mobile Smartphone Support

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 07:00 PM

http://www.marketwire.com/mw/release_html_b1?release_id=84008

"Mark/Space, Inc. today announced The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile, a substantial update to The Missing Sync for Pocket PC, synchronization software that connects Pocket PCs and Windows Mobile Smartphones to computers running Mac OS X. User submitted image

I guess this is good news for the Mac crowd. Then again, it's not available until the end of June, so the news isn't all that good. :? In caes you're interested, there is a full list of features available on the Mark/Space website.

Microsoft Techfest - A Sneak Peak at What the Future has to Offer

Posted by Mike Temporale in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 02:00 PM

http://archives.seattletimes.nwsource.com/cgi-bin/texis.cgi/web/vortex/display?slug=msftresearch03&date=20050303

"Microsoft Techfest ...is designed to expose employees to projects being developed in Redmond and Microsoft laboratories around the world. Employees have a hard time following who is working on what in such a large company, and Techfest tries to connect some and inspire others. Chairman Bill Gates is expected to tour the event today and might even take in a lecture on such topics as "bridging the gap between science data and databases" or "impromptu communication." Reporters were allowed in yesterday, but Microsoft kept them away from all but a few inventions."

User submitted image

One of the projects that reporters got to see at Techfest was remote picture browsing using Windows Media Center and a Windows Mobile Smartphone. Bill also ran a demo of this in his keynote speech for ES earlier this year. This is one project that I am really interested in. Now that I have my Media Center all setup and I have remote record running. I want to browse my pictures without taking them all with me! :D

German Cash-And-Carry Supermarket To Offer Windows Mobile Smartphone

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 08:30 AM

http://www.ppcw.net/?itemid=2166

"German cash-and-carry supermarket "real,-" today previewed their offer for next week and what can we see under the electronic category? Yes, it's the Sagem myS-7 Windows Mobile 2003 SE Smartphone, re-branded as Medion Smartphone. Between 20.12. and 25.12.2004 the Sagem myS-7 is available for 499,00 Euro and will also include "Navigon's (re-branded?) navigation software" for Smartphone."

If you live in Germany, it looks like you have a new Windows Mobile device coming. Although the $499 Euro price is a little steep.

It seems that re-branding devices is going to be the next big thing. The Sagem myS-7 is also showing up as a Mio Mitac device, and now Medion too. I hope this doesn't turn into another Typhoon where we have dozens of names for the same thing. :?

Cingular to Offer Audiovox SMT 5600?

Posted by marlof in "NEWS" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000623021375/

After the initial fear that Cingular was dropping the originally AT&T branded Audiovox SMT 5600 alltogether, and with killed one of the few Smartphone offerings in the USA, now there's some good news. Peter Rojas over at Engadget is reporting that Cingular might rerelease the phone soon!

"The public relations rep we spoke to said that it is still possible to find the SMT 5600 at a few of the former AT&T Wireless stores and through their B2B channel, but that they arent selling it online anymore. When asked if that meant the phone was basically dead (or dying), he told us that actually Cingular was testing the phone on their network and would be reintroducing it soon, but how soon, he couldnt say."
