Exchange 2003 Mobile Messaging Part 1 - A Look at the Microsoft DirectPush Technology

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "NEWS" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Exchange-2003-Mobile-Messaging-Part1-Microsoft-DirectPush-technology.html

"One of the most interesting features available in Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 is without doubt the new DirectPush technology (aka AUTD v2), which improves the mobile messaging experience for your end-users by providing close to real over the air (OTA) push technology. In this article, which is the first in a 5 part article series on mobile messaging using Exchange 2003 with SP2 applied and mobile devices running Windows Mobile 5.0 with the Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP) installed, well take a closer look at the new DirectPush technology."

MSExchange.org has a very interesting article up that takes us inside of Exchange 2003 SP2 and AUTD. If you were ever interested in learning how Microsoft's DirectPush technology works than this article is a step in the right direction. :)

Whitepaper on Exchange 2003 SP2 + WM5/MSFP Deployment

Posted by Jerry Raia in "ARTICLE" @ 03:00 PM

http://blogs.msdn.com/jasonlan/archive/2006/03/17/553951.aspx

"This document is designed primarily for Information Technology (IT) professionals who are responsible for planning and deploying mobile messaging systems that use MicrosoftR Exchange Server 2003 with Service Pack 2 (SP2) and MicrosoftR WindowsR MobileT-based devices that have the Messaging and Security Feature Pack."

For those of you who have been waiting and waiting and waiting for the MSFP here is more information. Of course this is geared toward the Exchanger Server side of the equation. If you are going to deploy this definitely give this a read. Even if you aren't you might find it interesting.

My Experiences with Installing Exchange 2003

Posted by Kris Kumar in "ARTICLE" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/activesync/exchange2003experience.htm

"Recently, I decided to setup Small Business Server (SBS) 2003 Premium with Exchange 2003. I setup Exchange so I can get a better idea how to setup Exchange and synchronizing with Windows Mobile 2003 and Windows Mobile 5.0. Synchronizing with Exchange is called Exchange ActiveSync (not to be confused with using ActiveSync with your desktop) or AirSync. In this article I use the term AirSync to refer to synchronizing with Exchange."

Chris De Herrera is talking about his experience with installing Exchange 2003 server and setting it up for over-the-air Exchange ActiveSync or AirSync. This should not be confused with the new push email system that is part of the much awaited MSFP release for the WM5.0 devices.

Some Highlights of What's New in Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2

Posted by Mike Temporale in "ARTICLE" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.infoworld.com/article/05/10/27/44OPenterwin_1.html

"The sexy stuff starts with new features. Microsoft is definitely looking to cash in on Americas gadget craze: Exchange is now capable of a variety of new smartphone and PDA-type features, centering on something called Direct Push Technology. This deal sends out whatever Exchange information the users entitled to, including not only e-mail but calendaring, contacts, the whole shebang. Whats nice is that this push is fairly intelligent. First off, its encrypted, and the Redmondians showed me a live demo of just how quick a transfer could be. Further speeding things up is that large messages and attached files are truncated. You can view pieces and then decide whether it's something you need to see in its entirety or to spare the bandwidth for something else."

Oliver Rist, over at InfoWorld.com, has a nice write up that covers off some of the bug fixes, and a lot of the new features that Exchange Service Pack 2 offers. While Direct Push may be the biggest part of SP2, there are other cool new features for the desktop users like using Sender Policy Framework (SPF) to identify phishing scams. I've been meaning to setup an Exchange server, and it's starting to look like it will be sooner rather than later.

Samsung Does It Again; The SCH-M600 - Another Smartphone with Windows Mobile 2003

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 08:15 AM

http://www.mobilemag.com/content/100/340/C4899/

User submitted image

Here's the latest Smartphone announced by Samsung - the SCH-M600. It features a 2.2 inch 240x320 pixel 262K colour screen, an Intel xScale PXA272 520MHz processor, a 3GB MicroDrive, 64MB ROM 64MB SDRAM, Bluetooth 1.1, USB 1.1, IrDA, CDMA, a 2 MegaPixel Camera, and it weights 162g. On top of all that, it runs Windows Mobile 2003 SE. It's a great looking phone and the features sound solid. But, where is Windows Mobile 5? Samsung was a premier partner at the launch, but they have failed to deliver a device running Windows Mobile 5. I wish I knew what is Samsung thinking.

Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 is Now Available

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 10:15 AM

http://blogs.technet.com/exchange/archive/2005/10/19/412686.aspx

Today's the day. Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 has been released offering much better always on email solution for the Windows Mobile enabled worker. While this is big news and a great step forward for Windows Mobile devices, you won't be able to enjoy the mobile benefits of SP2 unless you have the Messaging & Security Feature Pack for Windows Mobile 5 installed on your device. Hopefully we'll be seeing a flood of Windows Mobile 5 devices over the next little while with the MSFP baked into the ROM. 8)

The guys over at the Exchange Team Blog have posted links to the different language downloads that are available for SP2. Happy installing everyone!

Opera's Web Browser Now Available for Windows Mobile 2003 Smartphone

Posted by Jerry Raia in "SOFTWARE" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.opera.com/pressreleases/en/2005/06/30/

"Opera Software today released the latest version of the Opera Web browser, Opera 8, for Windows Mobile, finally enabling Smartphone users to surf the Web with speed and ease on their mobile devices. Opera's deployment to Microsoft's Windows Mobile platform is a result of customers' and operators' demand for a fast and full-featured Web browser on Windows Mobile devices."

I don't know why but I have never cared for this. I kept trying the preview releases and always ended up not liking them. For you fans however the wait is over and you can download it here.

The Design of Direct Push in Exchange 2003 SP2

Posted by Mike Temporale in "ARTICLE" @ 08:45 AM

http://blogs.technet.com/exchange/archive/2005/06/07/406035.aspx

"...we offered an always up-to-date (AUTD) solution based on text messaging at that time, but I wasnt happy with what was required in terms of provisioning and the server-side enforcement of latency so as to mitigate the impact of AUTDv1 on server performance. What to do. Around this time, we had begun looking into what it would take to offer an up-to-date mobile email solution ("AUTD," from here on) that competed with the likes of RIM, Good, et al. I liked the up-to-date nature of their solutions but had not personally adopted them for reasons of device choice (again with the form factor), setup costs (in terms of money, deployment overhead, and operational overhead), or both. Being on the Exchange team, weve always got two sets of customers: the administrative staff and end users, and we wanted to build a solution that worked well for both."

If you're administrating an Exchange server, or just plain interested in the technical details of Microsoft's new push email solution, you'll want to read this article. You might also want to check out Geekzone's thoughts on Exchange push email. All in all, it's very interesting stuff, and I can't wait to see how it works in real life. 8)

Pantech's First Windows Mobile OS 2003 Smartphone

Posted by Jerry Raia in "HARDWARE" @ 10:30 AM

http://www.phonemag.com/index.php/weblog/read_more/pantechs_first_windows_mobile_os_2003_smartphone_ph_s8000t

"Pantech unveiled its first smartphone based on Microsoft OS earlier today. Im afraid that the PH-S8000T smartphone is a few steps behind and a dime short because theres nothing terribly exciting about it. The PH-S8000T should hit Korean market sometime in Q1 this year."

User submitted image

I don't think too many of you will be panting over this one. It kind of looks like they had some left over parts laying around and decided to make a phone with them.

Resco Explorer 2003 5.0 Now Has a Registry Editor

Posted by Jerry Raia in "SOFTWARE" @ 07:00 PM

http://www.resco-net.com/downloads.asp

User submitted image

Now they aren't making a big deal about it yet. In fact there is no mention of it on the product page at all! Thanks to an astute source we find that the new version does indeed have a registry editor add on just like the Pocket PC version has always had. You have to go here to get it. The download link on the product page doesn't even get you the new version yet. I'm sure that their front page will catch up with their back page but until then you can check this out now. I have already downloaded it and it is a pleasure to use. :)

New iAnywhere Early Adopter Program Helps Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003 Customers

Posted by Jerry Raia in "NEWS" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.wirelessdevnet.com/news/2004/nov/16/news1.html

"iAnywhere Solutions, Inc., a subsidiary of Sybase, Inc. New Freeware - RJV Clock for Smartphone 2003

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 08:15 AM

http://www.airfagev.com/forum_view.asp?nav=1&msg_id=50056&referer=forum%5Ftopics%2Easp%3Fcode%3Dall

"RJV Clock is a free Digital Clock, Stopwatch, Countdown Timer and Lap Timer in one. Default sounds can be customized as desired."

User submitted image

RJV Clock features a Digital Clock, Stop Watch, Lap Timer, Countdown Timers, and replaceable sound files. A version is available for both 2002 and 2003 devices. However, the creator indicates that it might run very slow on a 2002 device! It seems like a pretty decent application for the price. Since I no longer have my Timex Ironman watch, this looks like it would make a nice replacement. :D
