Mippin Refreshes User Interface... and Leaves Me Unimpressed.

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "Smartphone News" @ 09:39 PM

http://www.mippin.com/app/faces/jsp/home.xhtml

"Mippin audience grows to 10 million monthly page views across 146 countries... Mippin, a free mobile media service that makes discovering, consuming, and sharing content on mobile phones easy, today announced that Judy Gibbons has joined the team as CEO. Additionally, in advance of the new 3G phone launch Mippin has further enhanced its service for iPhone. The refined version benefits from even faster performance and a number of user interface improvements that make finding, discovering and sharing interesting content more intuitive and effective."

So I took a bit of time to play around with Mippin today. I expected Mippin to be a fun and refreshing content portal based off of the upbeat and giddy press release that was sent my way. Unfortunately after playing around with it, it becomes quickly apparent that Mippin is no different from the dozens of other web portal applications out there. From what I could see there was no real benefit to using this service over any of the content, news and media portals that are provided by your carrier (e.g. - AT&T's http://home/). Now don't get me wrong, I don’t really think there is anything wrong with this service. The problem is that what Mippin has done has been done so many times before that I have literally been more impressed with cereal boxes than I was this service. A little word of advice to those out there working on 'the next big mobile content portal' - it has already been done! Move along people! Try building us something original and new… and maybe even useful if you want to be daring! Just please for the love of all things mobile and good stop rehashing the same old junk over and over again!

Sling Media Releases Windows Mobile 6 Client

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 05:30 AM

User submitted image

Sling Media has just released an update to their Windows Mobile client adding support for Windows Mobile 6 devices. As the picture shows, there is a change to the layout of the SlingPlayer Mobile. They have also added remote control functions for additional A/V devices. Existing customers can download the upgrade for free, however you will need to contact Sling to get a new registration code for this version. I'm pretty excited to give this a try on my devices. I just wish they would address the registration restrictions. It's so frustrating to have to request a new code everytime I change devices. :(

Full press release after the jump.
New version of SlingPlayer Mobile supports all versions of Windows Mobile 6 allowing customers to watch and control their home TV via a Windows Mobile handheld computer or mobile phone

Foster City, CA June 21, 2007
Sling Media, a digital lifestyle products company, today announced that its award-winning SlingPlayer Mobile software client is now compatible with Microsofts new Windows Mobile 6 operating system. We look forward to continuing our support for Windows Mobile-based products, providing customers with the best possible mobile TV experience available.

SlingPlayer Mobile is available for U.S. customers from Sling Medias web site at http://us.slingmedia.com/page/downloads.html. The retail price of the application is $29.99. SlingPlayer Mobile is available for Canadian customers at http://ca.slingmedia.com/page/downloads.html. The retail price is $34.99 CAD. Windows Mobile helps people stay connected to the information they care about whether they are traveling or staying close to home, said John ORourke, general manager at Microsoft Corp. New features in Windows Mobile 6 like support for wide screen viewing will offer SlingPlayer Mobile customers an enhanced mobile TV experience for viewing their favorite TV programs.

SlingPlayer Mobile gives consumers their entire home TV experience, including local channels, local sports teams, video on demand, pay per view, etc. Any program that you can watch on your sofa back home, you can now watch via a PC, Mac, or Windows Mobile-based device anywhere you can get a standard network connection (3G Cellular, WiFi, USB). Unable to See the Smartphone's Storage Card in the Media Player on Windows Vista?

Posted by Kris Kumar in "SOFTWARE" @ 04:30 AM

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931621/en-us

"You try to synchronize content from Microsoft Windows Media Player 11 to a Microsoft Windows Mobile 5-based device with AKU 2.3 or a later AKU. When you do this, the phone connects. However, only the internal storage on the phone is available in Windows Media Player as a synchronization target. This issue occurs because the canonical name for Windows Mobile 5-based devices with AKU 2.3 and later AKUs is truncated in Microsoft Windows Media Device Manager. This hotfix eliminates a bug that causes this truncation to occur."

Windows Vista is claimed to be one of the most heavily tested software developed by Microsoft. It is sad to see that problems like this one went unnoticed. If you are having trouble with the Media Player in Windows Vista being unable to recognise the storage card on your smartphone, then you must apply this hot-fix.

Sling Media Plans Support for Windows Mobile 6

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 07:45 AM

http://www.slingcommunity.com/blog/137/18617/?src=103

"Sling Media's Dave Zatz informed SlingCommunity today that SlingPlayer Mobile will indeed be coming to Microsoft's next generation mobile platform. Rest assured at some point in the future, Slingbox owners will enjoy their home television on the latest mobile devices running Windows Mobile 6. Other details, such as which versions of the new Mobile OS will be supported and a timeline for release, are unknown"

Well, it's not really much of a surprise with this news. Sling would be shooting themselves in the foot if they decided not to support the new OS. As for what devices will be supported, it's not hard to figure out. Sling Media has always focused on devices with greater than GPRS connections. So that would mean any device that offers WiFi, HSDPA, EDGE, 3G, etc... The only problem is that Sling Mobile is tied to the device. So you need to contact their support to move your serial number to a new device. For people like me that change devices almost as often as underwear, this is nothing short of a huge pain. :?

Sling Media Announces a New Sling Catcher Device

Posted by Mike Temporale in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 08:18 AM

http://www.foxnews.com/wires/2007Jan09/0,4670,GadgetShowSlingMedia,00.html

"The maker of Slingbox, a device that lets people watch their home television on laptops away from home, now plans to reverse that flow and bring Web video to television sets. Sling Media Inc. will unveil its upcoming SlingCatcher product at the International Consumer Electronics Show, joining a growing group of companies that aim to bring Web content into the living room. The SlingCatcher will be available in the middle of the year. The price has not been set but will be under $200, said Blake Krikorian, co-founder and CEO of the San Mateo, Calif.-based company. The new set-top box, which will echo the trapezoidal shapes of its Slingbox cousins, will send multimedia content of any format from the Web to a TV, whether it's a slideshow from a photo-sharing site, clips from a video sharing site, or films downloaded from an online movie service."

I don't know how many people are looking to take content from their computer and stream it to their TV. With DVD players coming way down in price, I can't see people spending a $100 to use their laptops DVD player to feed to the TV. On the plus side, later this year Sling will be releasing an update to the software that would allow you to catch streams from a SlingBox. Which is pretty cool. Although, I still can't come up with many situations where you would need such a setup. Either way, it's pretty cool technology. :)

Mobile Video Solution For Windows Media Center

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "SOFTWARE" @ 06:35 AM

http://www.makayama.com/mediacenter.html

"Do you have a Windows Media Center and a Windows Mobile phone? Yes? Well listen up! Makayama lets you watch your recorded Windows Media TV shows on more than 500 mobile devices. Install the software on your Windows Media Center PC then simply choose your mobile device - everything else is automatic. Every new TV recording will be converted in the background to a mobile video format which is then copied to the device when connected via USB. The software can be operated with a TV remote control and has the Windows Media Center look and feel."

This has to be one of the handiest software solutions to emerge for the Windows Mobile platform in a while. While I am a huge fan of Orb for streaming recorded TV shows to my handset, there are times when I would rather not mess around with streaming files and would prefer to have direct access to them. Now the real problem here is deciding whether I love my recorded shows enough to spend $34.95 for this software ;)

Aspyr Media Announces Call of Duty 2: Release Date in November

Posted by Jason Dunn in "SOFTWARE" @ 12:15 PM

http://www.aspyr.com/product/info/62

"Aspyr Media, Inc. announced this morning Call of Duty 2 for Pocket PCs is now live on their website. COD2 for Pocket PCs is expected to be released this November. Call of Duty 2 for Pocket PCs and handheld devices is optimized for Intel Corporations newest processor family for portable devices (codenamed Monahans) based on third-generation Intel XScale architecture. Activision's Call of Duty 2 is an award-winning, intense and cinematic first-person action game that transports gamers to the front lines of World War II. With exceptional AI that fights, evades and acts realistically, chaotic battlegrounds with exploding artillery and whizzing bullets, authentic battleground recreation, a vast arsenal of weaponry, and a highly polished gameplay progression, the excitement of the original PC version has been optimized and transported to handhelds."

I saw a screenshot of this game at Mobius Thailand 2006, but I wasn't expecting to see official release information quite so soon. The specifications for the game are interesting:

Software Version: Any Pocket PC or Smartphone with 28mb of free RAM (300 MHz Intel XScale processor, SD Card with 32mb)

Hardware accelerated version: Any Pocket PC or Smartphone with the Intel 2700G or Nvidia GoForce 5500 graphics chip (300 MHz Intel XScale processor, SD Card with 32mb free, 28mb of free RAM)

Definitely not for underpowered devices: most Smartphone owners will have to skip it (except for you Q owners). There's no mention of VGA or QVGA versions, but the screenshots are in VGA, so I'm assuming it means a full-on VGA version as an option. Interesting stuff - but I have to wonder how much pickup there will be for a product like this. I'm not aware of any device shipping that uses the GoForce 5500, and the devices using the Intel 2700G are few and far between. The software version is more compatible, though I wonder what the quality of the graphics will be like. Guess we'll have to wait until November!

Remote Media Access with Windows Mobile

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "NEWS" @ 11:15 PM

"Orb is a simply-named, but profoundly useful remote access digital media product that when used in conjunction with a Windows Mobile device, is guaranteed to put a smile on your face for sheer Wow! factor. Orb is both the name for the service and the software itself. You install it on any Windows XP-based computer, and it transforms your computer into a powerful solution for serving up your media from any browser, anywhere including the one found in your Windows Mobile device."

I am a huge fan of Orb and have been using it for well over a year. It is one of those must have applications that should be in every Smartphone users arsenal. My favorite feature of Orb is how nicely it interacts with Windows Media Center, being able to watch and delete my recorded shows while on the go has rescued me from many boring waiting rooms! Whether you are a user of Orb's free service or you are still teetering on the edge of indecision, waiting to take the plunge, I highly recommend giving Jason's article a read. :D

Windows Media Player for the Smartphone Examined

Posted by Mike Temporale in "ARTICLE" @ 09:45 AM

http://www.twoinchview.com/?p=56

"Using the Qtek 8500 as my primary music player involved more than just the hardware itself: the software played a bit role in shaping my experience. Windows Mobile 5 comes with Windows Media Player 10 Mobile, a smaller and more limited version of its desktop counterpart. Windows Media Player 10 on the desktop is what I used to transfer over my music onto the Qtek 8500. I set it to transcode my audio to 128 kbps WMA files - since I wasnt able to use my own headphones, I guessed that the bundled headphones wouldnt be high-quality enough for me to need anything higher than 128 kbps in quality (and boy was I right!)."

Jason examines the musical power of his new Qtek 8500 over on The Two Inch View. If you're looking to get a feel for how well HTC's StarTrek handles music, you'll want to give this a read. I've always been less then thrilled with Windows Media Player Mobile. It does the job, but that's about it. What are your thoughts? What applications do you use for music playback?

Thoughts Media Forums: The Long Term Plan

Posted by Jason Dunn in "UPDATE" @ 07:45 PM

http://forums.thoughtsmedia.com

When I started Pocket PC Thoughts in October 2000, it was a hobby blog born out of my passion to have a place to discuss everything about Pocket PCs. The first version was advertising-free, and paid for out of my pocket. I never would have envisioned that, six years later, I'd have four Web sites, a wonderful team of volunteer editors, moderators, and review team members just as passionate about their respective topics as I am, and be blessed with the ability to do this as my full-time job. Six years is a long time to amass experiences along the way, and to learn from them to make things better for the future.

Here's the short version if you're in a rush: by the end of the year, the Smartphone Thoughts forums will be merged into a new centralized set of vBulletin forums shared with other Thoughts Media sites. Go to the new "shell" our forums will be placed in and register using the same username and password you have here on this site (that's really important).

Here's the long version if you want to understand why the above decision was made: it's always been frustrating for me that the Thoughts Media Network has four different set of forums, requiring users to have four separate sets of username/password credentials. That's just plain stupid, and not something I ever intentionally set out to do. When we started the first set of forums on Pocket PC Thoughts, I knew nothing about online forum software. The helpful tech guy helping me out recommended phpBB, and at the time it seemed like a good idea so I didn't research any alternatives. The software was free, updated often, and would work with the custom front-page news system we created. When I launched Smartphone Thoughts, I realized having two sets of forums wasn't ideal, but with phpBB being unable to properly support sub-forums, it seemed like an even worse idea to try and combine everything together into one huge list of forums. Lastly, my content management system was designed to work with phpBB, so switching would require a complete re-design.
When Digital Media Thoughts was launched later on, the problem was only getting worse, and there was the added concern of privacy issues involving data replication of the user database across three sites (which was one solution to not forcing users to have three separate logins). All in all, it was a mess. To make matters worse, the phpBB release schedule slowed to a crawl - bug fixes were all they were putting out. The often-promised phpBB content management system was nowhere to be found, one of the main developers left the project, and as a free product there was no tech support or even anyone to turn to when spammers flooded our board. Because our CMS was essentially a phpBB hack, every time a new version of phpBB came out, upgrading the software was painful and slow.

See where this is going? Late last year, in discussions with all team members and my lead developer/designer Fabrizio Fiandanese, I decided to move away from phpBB. I investigated several forum solutions, and decided upon vBulletin for several reasons: some of the biggest sites out there were using it, and all seemed quite snappy and responsive despite their huge size. vBulletin is a commercial product with a yearly fee, which means I'd have access to real support. They update the product regularly, adding new features and security measures. The forum software itself wasn't quite as simple to use as phpBB, but much of that is because their default template isn't terribly good.

Picking the forum software was only half the solution though: we had an entire content management system to re-write from scratch, and in order to not get trapped by this problem again, our CMS would have to be written in such a way that it was completely separate from the forum software. It would have to "float" above the forum layer, injecting the post into the forum at the right time. By keeping it separate, it would also allow us to avoid the snares of problematic software updates. So over the past year, Fabrizio and I (well, ok, Fabrizio did all the coding :-D) have been working on this new CMS. We have five years of built-up functionality to replicate and improve upon, so to say that it's a big project is a huge understatement.

There are many advantages to the forum merger: with a single login to the Thoughts Media Network, community members will be able to comment on any story, on any site, without having to log in again. This will have the net result of increasing community posts across the network. It also allows editors to easily post a single story to multiple sites, and centralizes community commentary on those posts. Another advantage: subscriber services (once ported over to the new CMS) will be network-wide, meaning you'll pay once and have access to special services and offers on all four sites. It will take us a while to get implemented, but it's definitely a goal.

It's important for me to stress that this move is about combining the forums and not the communities themselves. Each site has it's own distinct community, and I don't want to take that away. vBulletin makes it simple for someone to not even have to see the other forums. For instance, on the Zune Thoughts home page (yes, we soft-launched today), when you click on the FORUMS link, you are taken right into the Zune Thoughts Forum which is skinned to match the site. There's no need to even see the other forum sections. We'll have a centralized Off Topic forum for all the sites, which saves me from having to post the same thing four times. ;-)

There's one disadvantage that I haven't figured out a way around yet: when a user clicks "View New Posts" in the forums, it will show them all of the new posts in the forums, not just the sub-forum they are in. So someone that only reads Pocket PC Thoughts will see new posts from the Smartphone Thoughts forums as well. One possible solution here is to find a way to colour-code or filter the results window, making it easy to quickly scan for the forum posts that interest you. When weighed against all of the advantages, I believe this issue is relatively minor, but I am aware of it.

This is a big change, and while I expect some grumbling (few people endorse change) I hope this post explains how and why this decision was made. I value each and every member of this community very highly, and my goal is always to deliver the best possible community experience possible. I believe this move will, in the end, position Thoughts Media and all its communities for future growth and success. I will follow this post up with a short FAQ that will hopefully answer most questions you may have, but feel free to ask about anything I didn't cover.

Roxio is offering a handy little tool to help you convert and transfer content from your Media Center to your Windows Mobile device. Those of us with a Media Center know the pain of transferring recorded content to your device for a road trip. This tool might make that a more pleasant experience. There is a trial version available and you can purchase a copy from the Roxio website for $30. If anyone here is brave enough to install it, be sure to let us know how it turns out. I'm always extremely cautious when it comes to installing software on my Media Center. :worried:

Announcing The Two Inch View, a Windows Mobile Media & Entertainment Blog

Posted by Jason Dunn in "SITES & RESOURCES" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.twoinchview.com

User submitted image

I'm very pleased to announce the launch of a new site I've been hired for, the Two Inch View, a Microsoft Windows Mobile-sponsored blog focused on all things Windows Mobile as they related to media and entertainment. Photos, videos, music, and gaming - if it's not "work", I'll be covering it on the blog. Allow myself to quote...myself:

"Welcome to this new blog, dedicated to Windows Mobile media and entertainment. And in case you didnt get it, the site name comes from the screen sizes of some of these devices. The Five Inch View just didnt sound as cool. ;-) Coverage will be focused purely on Windows Mobile devices, which includes Smartphones, Pocket PCs, and of course Portable Media Centers. My role here is to dig up interesting news items, write columns and tutorials about how to get the most out of your devices, and present you with reviews of great new hardware and software. Because this is a Microsoft Windows Mobile sponsored blog (as in, they pay for it), Im hoping to get interviews with key people on Microsoft teams to bring you the inside track on where things are headed. Im going to focus more on quality than quantity here. This is not going to be a high-volume news blog for that, look to the other sites that I work on, Pocket PC Thoughts, Smartphone Thoughts, and Digital Media Thoughts. This is also not meant to be a full-blown community site, hence the lack of forums. This is a simple blog, but I believe it will serve a useful purpose in the Windows Mobile world."

What does this mean for Pocket PC Thoughts, Smartphone Thoughts, and Digital Media Thoughts? Nothing at all - everything will remain the same on each of these sites, with perhaps the exception that as I devote time to creating content for the Two Inch View ("TIV" for short) it will be linked to from the appropriate Thoughts Media sites. That means more content for you. ;-)

So stop by, subscribe to the RSS feed, and join in the discussion. The design was created by Fabrizio Fiandanese (of course!) and I happen to think it looks killer. Feedback welcome, either here or over on the site.

PlaceShift Your TV with Sling Media and your Smartphone

Posted by Mike Temporale in "ARTICLE" @ 12:30 PM

SlingMedia has released a Windows Mobile Smartphone version of their popular SlingPlayer Mobile software. I've been lucky enough to be a member of the pre-Beta test group and thus, allowing me to play with the software for a number of weeks now, and I have to say; Sling Media has done an excellent job on the mobile client. Recently, I spent a couple weeks on the other side of the city, locked in a test lab with no real access to the Internet. A lot of my time was spent waiting for code to compile, run and possibly break. So, what did I do while I waited? Watched my home TV over GPRS on my Smartphone.
If you're not familiar with Sling Media or the Slingbox, you don't know what you've been missing, especially if you do any sort of traveling. All the Slingbox does is take what is currently playing on your home TV and stream it over the Internet to you. You can watch your TV from any Internet enabled computer or Windows Mobile 5 device. You can do more than just watch the TV too. You have full control of your TV as if you were sitting in front of it holding the remote control. You can even turn it on and off. If you have a Media Center, or another DVR/PVR type device, you can control that as well. Which means, all of the content you have recorded can be watched remotely over the Internet. You can pick up a Slingbox from Amazon (affiliate) for around $180, or from your local electronics store.

My GPRS connection has never been very fast. Any speed tests that I have done always seem to indicate a very slow connection. So I was pretty worried that I might not be able to use the Smartphone client. Needless to say, I was worrying about nothing. The resulting stream produces some excellent images considering the size of the device. If you have WiFi on your Smartphone, your even better off. The higher bandwidth really shows, especially if you're downloading email in the background. ;)

Figure 1: Launching the SlingPlayer client will present you with the familiar Sling logo and then it's ready for your commands.

Figure 2: The first thing you need to do, is setup your Slingbox on the mobile device. If you installed the client from a PC that already has SlingPlayer installed on it, then this is done automatically during the install.

Figure 3: To add your Slingbox to the Smartphone, you just need to go select Menu / Slingbox Directory / and then hit Add. Fill in the name, Finder ID, and password for your Slingbox and your all set to go.

Figure 4: In some circumstances, you might not be able to, or want to use the Finder ID. However, if you can use the Finder ID, I recommend that route over hard coding your IP address. Regardless, Sling has taken the extra time and effort to make sure you can still connect using your IP address instead.

Figure 5: Everyone always likes to play with and tweak the options of their applications. ;)

Figure 6: In the case of the Smartphone client, I don't think there's much room for tweaking. ;) And to be honest, I really don't think it needs much tweaking.

Figure 7: If you want to conserve bandwidth or would rather just listen to the TV, you can do that by simply selecting the player mode you want to use.

Figure 8: Let's get down to the good stuff. Connecting to your TV. Once you have your Slingbox setup, just press the Watch button. SlingPlayer will start by locating your Slingbox over the Internet and then it will begin the process of connecting to it and starting the stream. This screen will toggle between those 3 states and then start to show you your TV signal. It only takes a matter of 5 to 10 seconds before the picture appears.

Figure 9: Lucky for me, my kids left the TV tuned to the cartoon network, but that's not a problem.

Figure 10: I can quickly punch in the channel of my choice on the keypad and watch as my TV changes the channel and I get to watch the program of my choice. I'm on satellite service at home. You can see I'm tunning into a popular movie.

Figure 11: TV enjoyment, from wherever you might roam. :D

Screen captures can only show so much. The SlingPlayer Mobile client is a solid performer. If you do any traveling, or perhaps you're looking for a way to watch the World Cup games while you're not at home, I would strongly suggest you look into a Slingbox and SlingPlayer Mobile. :D

MobiPocket eNews Creator Banned from Thoughts Media Server

Posted by Jason Dunn in "THOUGHT" @ 08:44 PM

It's with a great sense of frustration that tonight I implemented a robots.txt ban of the Mobipocket eNews Creator bot. If that doesn't work I'll be implementing an IP address block. It's been a rough week for our server - we've had a lot of traffic and the server has been slow and unstable because of it. I dug into the logs to see where the traffic was coming from, and I was shocked to see huge amounts of traffic coming from a robot identifying itself as "eNews Creator". How huge? On Wednesday the 17th of this month, the eNews Creator bot hit Pocket PC Thoughts.com 37,499 times alone (the numbers for Smartphone Thoughts weren't as bit, but still large). Half a gig of bandwidth in one day. The entire month of April? Our server was hit 938,472 times, for a total of 18.55 GB of bandwidth. To put those numbers into perspective, the Google bot only hit us 431,010 times in the same month and only used 3.29 GB of bandwidth.I don't take this action lightly, because there are evidently people interested in using the Mobipocket client to read news from Smartphone Thoughts. The problem is that Mobipocket has evidently created their software without regard for the servers that they are scraping. They created it to hit servers without respecting the rights of the publisher. No RSS/scraper client needs to hit a server 37 thousand times in one day, period. Upon discovering this information, I attempted to contact Mobipocket to resolve the matter. I scoured their Web site looking for some way to contact them directly - nothing. No email addresses, no contact form - they direct everything into the forums. I managed to find one email address on their privacy page, but upon emailing it I received an autoresponder stating that they did not monitor the alias and only responded to posts in the forums. I tried webmater@ and postmaster@ - two email aliases that should always work. Neither did - both bounced back because the aliases do not exist. I sent two private messages to Mobipocket employees in the forums on Thursday, asking them to respond to this issue, and 48 hours later I haven't received a response. I tried sending a private message to the forum admin - they've configured the admin account to refuse all private messages. :roll:If you're a Smartphone Thoughts reader that uses the Mobipocket client, I'd encourage you to contact them and point them to this posting. I'd like to find a way to resolve this. In the meantime, use NewsBreak and subscribe to our RSS feed.
